A new Classical T Tauri object at the sub-stellar boundary in Chamaeleon II
نویسنده
چکیده
We have obtained lowand medium-resolution optical spectra of 20 candidate young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby Chamaeleon II dark cloud, using the Magellan Baade telescope. We analyze these data in conjunction with near-infrared photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey. We find that one target, [VCE2001] C41, exhibits broad Hα emission as well as a variety of forbidden emission lines. These signatures are usually associated with accretion and outflow in young stars and brown dwarfs. Our spectra of C41 also reveal Li I in absorption and allow us to derive a spectral type of M5.5 for it. Therefore, we propose that C41 is a classical T Tauri object near the sub-stellar boundary. Thirteen other targets in our sample have continuum spectra without intrinsic absorption or emission features, and are difficult to characterize. They may be background giants or foreground field stars not associated with the cloud or embedded protostars, and need further investigation. The six remaining candidates, with moderate reddening, are likely to be older field dwarfs, given their spectral types, lack of lithium and Hα. A near-infrared study of IRAS-selected T Tauri stars in Chamaeleon II
We use near-infrared photometry of objects detected by IRAS to confirm four new T Tauri stars in Chamaeleon II. Observations of these sources generally agree with the T Tauri signatures of locus in the near-infrared color-color diagram, midinfrared spectral index, and IRAS far-infrared colors. Infrared properties of these stars are similar to optically selected T Tauri stars in Cha II, but are ...
متن کاملA ROSAT pointed observation of the Chamaeleon II dark cloud
A deep 13.5 ksec ROSAT PSPC pointed observation in the Chamaeleon II (Cha II) cloud is reported. 40 X-ray sources are detected of which 14 can be identified with previously known young stellar objects (YSOs), namely IRAS sources, classical T Tauri stars and weak T Tauri stars. From spectroscopic followup observations, four new weak T Tauri candidates have been found. The X-ray sources are mainl...
متن کاملFinding new sub-stellar co-moving companion candidates - the case of CT Cha
We have searched for close and faint companions around T Tauri stars in the Chamaeleon star forming region. Two epochs of direct imaging data were taken with the VLT Adaptive Optics instrument NaCo in February 2006 and March 2007 in Ks band for the classical T Tauri star CT Cha together with a Hipparcos binary for astrometric calibration. Moreover a J band image was taken in March 2007 to get c...
متن کاملLow mass T Tauri and young brown dwarf candidates in the Chamaeleon II dark cloud found by DENIS
We define a sample designed to select low-mass T Tauri stars and young brown dwarfs using DENIS data in the Chamaeleon II molecular cloud. We use a star count method to construct an extinction map of the Chamaeleon II cloud. We select our low-mass T Tauri star and young brown dwarf candidates by their strong infrared color excess in the I − J/J − Ks color-color dereddened diagram. We retain onl...
متن کاملDirect evidence of a sub-stellar companion around CT Cha
Aims. In our ongoing search for close and faint companions around T Tauri stars in the Chamaeleon star-forming region, we here present observations of a new common proper motion companion to the young T-Tauri star and Chamaeleon member CT Cha and discuss its properties in comparison to other young, low-mass objects and to synthetic model spectra from different origins. Methods. Common proper mo...
